The Tint compliance card sits on a quote's detail page. It compares the shades you plan to install with the state's legal VLT (visible light transmission) limits. It only shows on quotes that have window tint work on them. Detailing, PPF, ceramic coating and flat glass quotes don't get it.
Open the card
- Open a quote that has window tint from your Quotes list. See Quotes list view.
- Find the Tint compliance card. Its note reads: "State VLT check. If the customer wants to go darker than legal, their acknowledgement is captured automatically when they sign at invoice/checkout."
Fill in the card
- Install state: where the work happens. It starts as the quote's saved install state, or your shop's state.
- Registration state: for a car registered in another state. Leave it on Same as install / local for a local car.
- Vehicle class: Sedan / coupe or SUV / truck / van. It starts from the vehicle's body type. If the vehicle has a 17-character VIN, SalesThumb decodes it to fill the class. A class you pick yourself is never replaced by the VIN.
- Proposed VLT % per window: type a percent from 0 to 100 for Windshield, Front Sides, Back Sides and Rear. Leave a window blank if it isn't on this quote. Blank windows aren't checked.
A new card starts with sides and rear at 35% and the windshield blank. It says "Using default VLTs (sides and rear 35%) — set them to the films on this quote." until you change a number.
There is no Save button. Once a state is picked, your choices save by themselves a moment after you change them.
Read the result
- Within basic [State] VLT limits (green): the shades you typed are inside the state's basic limits. The card adds "Based on entered film ratings, not a meter reading." Some states show conditions or an install sticker note under it.
- Check before install (amber): a quote line looks like a full windshield and no windshield percent is entered. The card says to confirm the VLT or a medical exemption.
- Below [State] legal VLT limits (red): the card lists each window that is too dark. It also shows a preview of the customer acknowledgement.
A green result is not a legal ruling. The card only compares the numbers you enter. It does not meter the glass.
Out-of-state cars
Pick a Registration state that differs from the Install state and SalesThumb also checks the registration state's law. If the tint is fine where you install but not where the car is registered, an amber box appears: "Out-of-state vehicle — cross-border tint risk". It lists the windows involved and says to pre-stage a waiver before installing.
What the customer signs
Nobody on your team signs on this card. Your picks are saved on the quote. When the customer signs the service waiver on the invoice, the acknowledgement is captured in that one signature. See Invoice waiver and completion signatures. Once the card has a state and shades, a medical exemption card can appear below it. See Recording a medical tint exemption.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Why don't I see the Tint compliance card on a quote?
A: It only shows on quotes with window tint work. Detailing, PPF, ceramic coating and flat glass quotes don't get it.
Q: Do I need to save the card?
A: No. Your picks save on their own a moment after you change them, once an install state is chosen.
Q: Does a green result mean the tint is legal?
A: No. It only compares the shades you entered with the state's basic limits. It is based on film ratings, not a meter reading.
Q: What is the registration state for?
A: It is for cars registered in another state. If the tint is fine where you install but not where the car is registered, the card warns you about the cross-border risk.
Q: Does my team sign anything on this card?
A: No. The customer's acknowledgement is captured automatically when they sign at invoice or checkout.
