Routing customer leads to the right location by ZIP code

Turn on your brand's find-a-location page and send each customer lead to the location whose territory covers the customer's ZIP code.

5 min read

Lead routing gives your brand a find-a-location page. A customer types their ZIP code and asks for a quote, and the lead goes to the location whose sold territory covers that ZIP. Leads no location covers go to HQ, or to a location you pick. It's part of the HQ add-on, and only HQ owners and admins can set it up.

Turn it on

  1. In the HQ sidebar, open Settings under Admin, then Lead Routing.
  2. Tick Turn on lead routing. It's off by default, and the find-a-location page isn't available while it's off.
  3. Under When no location covers the area, pick Keep in the HQ inbox or Send to one location (then pick the location).
  4. Tick Show the location finder to list your active locations on the page and let visitors look up which one serves their ZIP. Leave it off to show the quote form only.
  5. Save.

The card shows your page address. You can also use /find-a-location on your verified HQ domain.

How a lead is matched

A lead goes to the location whose sold territory covers its ZIP code. Drawn areas (a radius, a drawn shape, counties or block groups) also count if you have +Territory Mapping. Without it, a banner tells you how many drawn territories are being skipped.

If the location that covers the area is paused, the lead waits in the HQ inbox. If your fallback location is paused, it waits there too.

The location gets the lead as a new customer and a new lead on its Leads page.

Test an address

The Test an address card shows where a lead would go. Type a ZIP code (and a Street address, optional) and click Preview. Nothing is saved and nobody is notified.

The routing log

In the HQ sidebar, click Lead Routing under Network. It has three tabs:

  • Log: every lead, newest first, with the time, status, ZIP, location and why it went there.
  • HQ inbox: leads no location covers, waiting for HQ. Click Assign to send one to a location.
  • Report: counts by location, by reason and by status for the last 7, 30 or 90 days.

To send a routed lead somewhere else, click Move on its row. Some leads can't be moved, such as one that matched a customer the location already had. The dialog explains why.

The log never shows the customer's contact details.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What happens to a lead when no location covers the ZIP?

A: It goes to your fallback. That's either the HQ inbox on the routing log, where you can assign it, or the one location you picked.

Q: Do drawn territories count for routing?

A: Only with +Territory Mapping. Without it, leads route by the ZIP codes in each sold territory, and a banner shows how many drawn territories are being skipped.

Q: Does testing an address create a lead?

A: No. Preview shows where a lead would go. Nothing is saved and nobody is notified.

Q: Can I move a lead to a different location?

A: Yes, click Move on its row in the log. A few leads can't be moved, such as one that matched a customer the location already had, and the dialog says why.
