The AI Report Writer card on the Reports dashboard writes a short business summary for you. It gives a headline, highlights, what changed and what to do next. It writes from your own numbers, so it only describes what is already in your reports.
Where to find it
Click Reports in the sidebar and stay on the dashboard view. The card sits just under the monthly story recap. It does not show in the Detail view.
You need permission to view financial reports. If your role doesn't have it, the card is hidden. See Team roles and permissions.
Write a summary
- On the card, pick week or month. Month is selected by default.
- Click Generate AI summary. The button reads Writing… while it works.
- Read the result. The button now says Regenerate.
Week means the past 7 days. Month means the past 30 days. Each one is compared with the same-length stretch just before it. The date range at the top of Reports doesn't change it.
If you flip between week and month after a summary is on screen, nothing changes until you click Regenerate.
What you see
- A one-line headline.
- Highlights: a few short bullets with your key numbers.
- What changed: bullets that compare this period with the one before.
- Recommendations: practical next steps based on those numbers.
A section is left out if there is nothing to put in it. When there is a prior period to compare, a small badge shows the revenue change, for example "+12% rev". A small dot shows next to the title once a summary is on screen. A green dot means the AI wrote it. An amber dot means the AI wasn't available, so the card showed a plain version of your numbers instead.
What numbers it uses
SalesThumb works out the totals first, then the AI only puts them into words. The totals are:
- Revenue collected from completed payments, after refunds, and how many payments that was.
- Average ticket.
- Appointments booked and completed, plus no-shows.
- Quotes sent and won, and your close rate.
- New customers.
- Your top service category by completed jobs.
It is told to use only those numbers. With very little activity, the summary will be short and plain.
Good to know
- Nothing is saved. If you leave the page, the summary is gone. Click Generate AI summary again to get a new one.
- It only reads your data. It doesn't change prices, send messages or edit anything.
- In the plain version, the Recommendations line can read "AI-written recommendations aren't available right now. The metrics above are live." The numbers in that version are still your real ones.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Why can't I see the AI Report Writer card?
A: It only shows on the dashboard view of Reports, not the Detail view. It is also hidden unless your role can view financial reports.
Q: What does "Requires Pro or higher" mean?
A: The AI Report Writer is part of the Pro plan. On a lower plan, clicking Generate AI summary shows "Your plan doesn't include this AI tool. Requires Pro or higher."
Q: Does it follow the date range at the top of Reports?
A: No. It always uses the past 7 days or the past 30 days, depending on the week or month switch, and compares that with the same length of time just before.
Q: Is the summary saved anywhere?
A: No. It only stays on screen. Leave the page and it is gone, so click Generate AI summary again when you want a fresh one.
