Sell Gift Card in the SalesThumb mobile app lets you issue a new gift card from your phone at the counter. You enter the amount, and the app creates the card and emails the code to the buyer or the person it's for. Gift cards are part of the Growth and Pro plans.
The app doesn't charge the customer. Take the payment first on your normal card reader or register, then issue the card in the app.
Who can sell gift cards
You need both of these:
- Sales access in the mobile app.
- Permission to manage gift cards. Owners and admins have it by default. Other roles need it added by the shop owner.
If you're missing the permission, the Sell Gift Card option doesn't appear in your menu.
Selling a gift card
- Take the customer's payment for the card amount the way you normally do.
- Tap the round thumb button at the bottom of the screen to open Go to, then tap Sell Gift Card under Sales.
- Under Amount, tap a preset ($25.00, $50.00, $100.00 or $200.00) or type your own amount. The minimum is $5.00.
- Under Purchaser (optional), enter the buyer's Name and Email if you have them.
- Under Recipient (optional), enter the name and email of the person the card is for. Leave it blank to send the code to the purchaser instead.
- Add a personal note in the message box if the customer wants one. It's included in the email.
- Tap Sell Gift Card · $amount.
- Check the confirmation. It shows the amount and the email address the code will go to. Tap Sell Gift Card to finish, or Cancel to go back.
After the sale
The Gift card sold screen shows the amount and the gift card code.
- If you entered an email, the screen says "Emailed to" that address. The email includes the card code and its PIN. If there's a recipient email, it goes there. If not, it goes to the purchaser.
- If you didn't enter any email, nothing is sent. Write the code down for the customer before you leave the screen.
Tap Sell another to clear the form for the next card, or Done to go back.
Things to know
- There's no undo in the app. The card can be spent as soon as it's issued, and it can't be voided or refunded from the app. Double-check the amount before you confirm.
- Lost connection mid-sale? If you tap Sell Gift Card again on the same form after an error, the app won't make a second card for the same sale.
- Cards made in the app don't expire.
- To use a card, ring up the sale in Quick Sale and use Pay with gift card.

Frequently asked questions
Q: Does the app charge the customer's card?
A: No. Take payment on your usual card reader or register first. The app only issues the gift card.
Q: What if the customer has no email?
A: Leave both email fields blank. The app shows the gift card code on screen so you can write it down for them. Nothing is emailed.
Q: Can I cancel a gift card I just sold by mistake?
A: Not from the mobile app. The app warns you before you confirm because the card can't be voided or refunded there.
Q: Why don't I see Sell Gift Card in the menu?
A: You need Sales access in the app and permission to manage gift cards, which owners and admins have by default. Gift cards also need the Growth or Pro plan.
