Tech Pay works out what each installer would earn in commission for a pay period, based on the completed jobs they did. Owners and admins save the shop's default commission rule on the web. Owners, admins and managers then check each tech's numbers in the SalesThumb mobile app. Tech Pay only calculates. It never runs payroll, marks anything paid, or moves money. You take the numbers to your payroll provider yourself.
Where to find it
- On the web: click Settings in the sidebar, then the Tech Pay card in the Essential group ("Default commission rule for the Tech Pay & Commission Engine"). You can also type "tech pay" into Search settings....
- In the mobile app: tap the round button at the bottom center to open the Go to panel, then tap Tech Pay ("Commission by pay period") under Reports.
Who can see and change it
- Anyone with permission to view financial reports can open Tech Pay and see the numbers. By default that's Owner, Admin and Manager. Technicians, Front Desk and Service Writers see "Tech Pay settings are restricted to owners, admins, and managers."
- Only people with the payroll permission can save or change the shop's default rule. By default that's Owner and Admin. A Manager can see what techs are owed but can't change how every tech gets paid going forward.
Choosing a rule type
There are two kinds of rule:
- Flat rate: one percentage of each tech's revenue for the period. Type it into Rate on attributable revenue, for example 15 for 15%.
- Tiered: each tier has a starting dollar amount (From $) and a percentage. Here's the important part: "A tech's whole period pays at the highest tier their total revenue reaches." Tiers aren't layered like tax brackets. If tiers start at $0 and $5,000 and a tech brings in $6,000, all $6,000 pays at the $5,000 tier's rate. A tech who doesn't reach any tier's starting amount gets the lowest tier's rate.
You can add up to 20 tiers with Add tier. Remove one with the trash icon next to it. You can't delete the last remaining tier.
Saving your shop's default rule (web)
- Open Settings → Tech Pay.
- Under Default commission rule, click Flat rate or Tiered.
- Enter your rate, or your tiers.
- Click Save default. When it works, a Saved check mark appears and you'll see "Default commission rule saved."
If a field is blank or not a number, you'll see "Enter a valid rate to save a default." and the button stays off. Percentages can run from 0 to 1000.
Above the buttons, the page shows your Current default, for example "Flat 15%" or "Tiered (3 tiers)". If you haven't saved one yet, it says "No default configured yet."
Checking what each tech earned (mobile)
- Open Tech Pay from the Go to panel.
- Pick a period: This week, Last week, This month or Last month. Weeks run Monday to Sunday. "This week" and "This month" run up to right now.
- Check the Commission rule card. If your shop has a saved default, the card opens with it already filled in. You can change the numbers to try a one-off "what if". That changes this screen only, not the saved default.
- Read the Per-tech commission card. Each tech has a row with their revenue, their effective rate, and their commission. Period totals sits at the bottom.
- Tap Share summary to send a plain-text, comma-separated summary through your phone's share sheet. You can paste it into an email or hand it to your payroll provider.
Owners and Admins also see Save as this shop's default on this screen. It saves whatever is in the rule editor as the new shop default, the same as the web Settings page does.
What counts as a tech's revenue
- Only completed appointments count, dated by when they were completed. The installer assigned to the appointment gets the credit.
- The appointment needs an invoice that is paid, partially paid, or sent. Draft, voided and refunded invoices don't count.
- If one invoice covers jobs done by more than one tech, the invoice total is split evenly between them. Nobody gets full credit for the whole thing.
If a period has nothing that qualifies, you'll see "No attributable revenue in this period."
How this differs from recorded commissions
Tech Pay doesn't save anything to a tech's record. The commission amounts on the Commission Report and Payroll Summary, and on a tech's own My Earnings screen, come from the commission entries you record on each team member's page in Settings → Team. Tech Pay doesn't change those entries. See Reading the Staff & Payroll reports.

Frequently asked questions
Q: Does saving a Tech Pay rule pay my techs or add commission to their records?
A: No. Tech Pay only calculates. It never runs payroll, marks anything paid, or writes commission entries. Commission amounts on the Commission Report, the Payroll Summary and My Earnings come from the commissions recorded on each team member's page under Settings → Team.
Q: How does a tiered rule work?
A: A tech's whole period pays at the rate of the highest tier their total revenue reaches. It isn't layered like tax brackets. If they don't reach any tier's starting amount, the lowest tier's rate applies.
Q: Why can my manager see Tech Pay but not change the default rule?
A: Seeing Tech Pay needs the financial reports permission, which Managers have by default. Saving the shop default needs the payroll permission, which only Owners and Admins have by default.
Q: Which jobs count toward a tech's revenue?
A: Completed appointments in the period, credited to the assigned installer, with an invoice that's paid, partially paid or sent. Draft, voided and refunded invoices don't count. An invoice shared by several techs is split evenly between them.
Q: Can I set a different commission percentage per service?
A: Not from these screens. The web Settings page and the mobile Tech Pay screen support Flat rate and Tiered rules only.
