Inventory

Scan an inventory barcode on the web

Use the Scan button on the Inventory page to jump to an item by its barcode, with a typed-code fallback and a shortcut to add items that aren't found.

3 min read

The Scan button on the Inventory page finds an item from its barcode or UPC. It uses your computer's camera, or you can type the code. Inventory is part of the Growth and Pro plans.

Scan an item

  1. Open Inventory in the sidebar.
  2. Click Scan, next to the Search items… box.
  3. In the Scan barcode window, point the camera at the barcode. Keep it inside the frame.
  4. When the code is read, SalesThumb opens that item's page and shows "Found [item name]".

No camera, or the camera is blocked

Camera scanning needs a browser that can read barcodes, such as Chrome or Edge. In other browsers the window says "Camera barcode scanning isn't supported in this browser (try Chrome or Edge). Enter the barcode manually below." If you blocked the camera, it says "Camera access was denied. Allow camera access, or enter the barcode below."

You can always type the code instead:

  1. Use the Or type it field, which shows Barcode / UPC.
  2. Type the code and click Look up.

If no item matches

The window shows "No item matches that barcode." and stays open, so you can scan again. A message also asks "No item matches that barcode. Add it as a new item?" Click Add item to open the new item form with the Barcode field already filled in.

Add a barcode to an item

A scan only finds items that already have a barcode saved. Type it into the Barcode field on the item form (placeholder "Scanned UPC / EAN"). The help text there reads "Enables camera scan-to-lookup from the inventory list."

  • The match is exact, and only within your shop. Another shop with the same product has its own record.
  • Each barcode can belong to only one item in your shop.

On a phone, use the mobile app instead. See Scanning inventory barcodes with the mobile app.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Why does the scanner say no item matches?

A: No item in your shop has that exact barcode saved. Add the barcode to the item, or use Add item to create a new one with the code filled in.

Q: Which browsers can scan with the camera?

A: Chrome and Edge. In other browsers you can type the code in the Or type it field.

Q: Does scanning change my stock count?

A: No. A scan only opens the item. You make any stock changes on the item's page.

Q: Which plans include inventory scanning?

A: Inventory is part of the Growth and Pro plans, and the scan lookup is part of inventory.
