This tool lives on the Services tab under Settings (/app/settings/services). In the services table, any catalog service that doesn't already have a description shows a small "AI · Write description" link in place of description text. Click it and the AI drafts a short customer-facing description for that one service, using only what's already on the service record — its name, category, listed price, and duration — plus your shop's name and the verticals you're set up for. It comes back as a preview only. Nothing is saved to the service until you explicitly click Apply.
Drafting and reviewing a description
Click "AI · Write description" next to a service that's missing one, and it shows a small spinner while the draft is put together. When it's ready, the drafted text appears in a small preview box with three options underneath: Apply, Discard, and Regenerate. Discard clears the draft without saving anything — you're back to the plain "AI · Write description" link. Regenerate throws away the current draft and requests a new one, which is useful if the first pass doesn't sound like how you'd describe that service.
Applying a draft
Clicking Apply saves the drafted text into that service's description field through the same update path used when you edit a service by hand — so it's covered by the same "manage pricing" permission that gates editing a service's price, name, or other catalog fields. Owner, Admin, and Manager roles have that permission by default; Technician, Front Desk, and Service Writer don't. Generating a draft doesn't require that permission at all, but applying one does — so a teammate without catalog-edit access can preview a suggested description but won't be able to save it.
Because the link only shows up next to services with a blank description, this is a fill-in-the-blank tool rather than a rewrite tool — it's meant for services that have never had a description, not for revising one you've already written.
Things to know
- No separate plan is required. Drafting a description here isn't gated behind a specific plan tier the way some of SalesThumb's other AI tools are.
- It still draws on your shop's overall AI usage. Even though it isn't plan-gated, every AI feature in the app pulls from the same shop-wide AI usage allowance. If your shop is over that allowance for the current period, this quietly falls back to the same generic placeholder text described below instead of a real draft, until the next period or added AI credits bring it back.
- Stub mode gives you a generic placeholder, not a real draft. If the deployment doesn't have live AI configured, you still get description text back — but it's a short, fixed template that only varies by the service's category, not something written from your shop's actual name, price, or duration. Treat it as filler, not real copy.
- Vinyl Wrap and Removal categories fall back to the same generic wording as an uncategorized service when a placeholder is used, rather than something wrap- or removal-specific — worth knowing if you run either of those and the fallback text doesn't sound tailored to that service at all.
- There's no on-screen "Live" vs. "Stub" indicator here. Some other AI tools in SalesThumb show a badge telling you whether you got real model output or a placeholder; this one doesn't surface that anywhere on the Services page. If a draft reads generically, that's worth a second look rather than assuming it's tailored to your shop.
- It only works from what's already on the service. The description it drafts should only reflect details you've already entered — name, category, price, duration — not a price, exact turnaround time, or warranty claim you haven't put on that service yet.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Does the AI-written description get saved automatically?
A: No. It comes back as a preview only. Nothing is saved to the service until you click Apply — Discard throws the draft away and Regenerate asks for a new one, either way with no change to the actual service record.
Q: Do I need a specific plan to use this?
A: No. Unlike some of SalesThumb's other AI features, drafting a description here isn't gated behind a plan tier. It does still draw on your shop's overall AI usage allowance, though, so a shop that's maxed out its AI usage across every AI feature for the period will get generic placeholder text here too until that resets.
Q: Can any teammate apply a suggested description?
A: Generating a draft doesn't require any special permission, but saving it does — Apply goes through the same "manage pricing" permission that gates editing a service's price or name by hand. Owner, Admin, and Manager have that by default; Technician, Front Desk, and Service Writer don't.
Q: Will it invent details I haven't entered, like a price or warranty?
A: It's built to work only from what's already on the service — name, category, price, and duration — plus your shop's name and verticals. It isn't meant to add a price, exact time, or warranty claim you haven't already put on that service.
Q: How do I know if I got a real AI draft or just a placeholder?
A: There's no badge on this page telling you which one you got, unlike some of SalesThumb's other AI tools. If live AI isn't configured for the deployment, or your shop is over its AI usage allowance for the period, you'll get a short generic description based only on the service's category — worth a second read if a draft feels unusually generic.
Q: Can I use this to rewrite a description I already wrote?
A: Not directly from this table. The "AI · Write description" link only appears next to services with a blank description field. To get a fresh AI draft for a service that already has one, clear its description first.
