Inventory → Reorder points (`/app/inventory/reorder`) is where you configure the thresholds that decide when SalesThumb warns you a film product or inventory item is running low. It's built for whoever owns purchasing at your shop — typically an Owner, Admin, or Manager — and it's a configuration view, not just an alert feed: every reorder point you've ever set shows up here, whether it's currently breached, healthy, or switched off.
Adding a reorder point
Click Add reorder point to open the dialog, then:
1. Pick a target kind — Film product or Inventory item. This decides what unit the threshold is measured in: film is tracked in inches of film remaining across that product's active rolls, items in whole units on hand. 2. Pick the specific product or item from the dropdown. Only targets that don't already have a reorder point configured are listed — if a product or item you're looking for is missing, it already has a row on this page (even a switched-off one); edit that row instead of trying to add a duplicate. 3. Enter the reorder point as a whole number, zero or greater. For a film target, the dialog shows a live feet-equivalent underneath the field as a sanity check on the inches you typed. 4. Save. The row appears immediately, armed.
Editing an existing row, and what "Re-arm" means
Click Edit (the same button reads Re-arm when a row is switched off) to reopen the dialog for that row. The target kind and the target itself are locked while editing — you can only change the threshold number, not repoint the row at a different product or item. Saving always re-enables the row, which is the entire mechanism for turning a switched-off reorder point back on: open Edit, confirm or adjust the number, hit save.
Switching a reorder point off
Every armed row has a Switch off action (with a confirmation step). This is a soft disable, not a delete: the threshold value is kept, the row drops out of the low-stock email and the Alerts tab list, and it moves to the bottom of this page's list with reduced emphasis and an "Off" badge. Nothing is lost — re-arm it later through Edit whenever you want it watching again.
Rows on this page are ordered breached-first, then healthy-and-armed, then switched-off, alphabetically within each group, and the card header shows a running count of how many are armed and how many are currently low.
How this page relates to the Overview tab's alert controls
This page is not the only place a reorder point lives — and the relationship works differently for film than it does for items.
Film products carry a separate threshold field of their own on the Inventory Overview tab (`/app/inventory`) — the concept is covered in Low-stock alerts. That Overview-tab number drives the dashboard's film panel, draft-PO suggestions, and the Film roll alerts card. It's a genuinely different stored value from this page's row for that same product; this page's row is what actually feeds the hourly low-stock email and the Alerts tab's item list.
They start out matching: saving a threshold on the Overview tab for a film product automatically creates or arms that product's row on this page too, so it can show up here already armed without you having touched this screen — and clearing the Overview-tab field back to empty switches that row off here rather than deleting it. But the sync only runs from the Overview tab toward this page. Editing the number here, or switching it off here, never updates the Overview tab's own field. So once you touch either one from this page, a film product's two numbers can drift apart.
Inventory items work differently: there's no second stored number. Each item's row on the Overview tab has its own bell-icon Alert threshold control, but it isn't a separate field the way film's is — it edits this exact same reorder point. Arm, adjust, or switch off an item's threshold from either screen and the other one reflects it, because they're reading and writing the identical row. The one thing that Overview-tab control can't do is fully switch a row off — its "Clear" option resets the threshold to 0 rather than disabling it, so an item can look cleared there while still technically armed at 0 until you use Switch off on this page.
Things to know
- Viewing this page requires Inventory to be enabled on your plan. Adding, editing, or switching a reorder point on or off additionally requires the "manage inventory" permission (Owner/Admin/Manager by default) — anyone without it can still view the list but gets a permission error on save.
- A row's target is fixed once created. There's no way to repoint an existing row at a different film product or item — add a new reorder point for that target instead, and edit the old one separately if it's no longer needed.
- Even a switched-off row keeps its target reserved: you can't add a second reorder point for a target that already has one here, on or off. Re-arm the existing row rather than trying to create a fresh one.
- On-hand figures shown on this page use the same live calculation the Alerts tab uses — remaining inches across active rolls for film, net units on hand for items — so the numbers here and on Alerts should always agree.
- If a row's target can no longer be resolved (an archived item or a deactivated film product), on-hand shows as "—" instead of a guessed value.
- Clearing an item's threshold through the Overview tab's bell-icon control resets it to 0 rather than switching the row off. For a full disable, use Switch off on this page instead.
- Every armed reorder point is re-checked hourly, and a shop gets at most one consolidated low-stock email per target per day, not one every hour it stays low.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Is this the same reorder threshold as the one on a film product's Overview tab?
A: For film, no — they're two independent systems. The Overview-tab field drives the dashboard film panel, draft-PO suggestions, and the Film roll alerts card. This page's table is what actually triggers the hourly low-stock email and the Alerts tab list. Saving a value on the Overview tab does create or arm the matching row here automatically, but editing or switching off a row on this page never updates the Overview tab back — so the two can end up different once you touch either one from here. Inventory items don't have this split: an item's Overview-tab alert control edits the exact same row this page shows, not a second number.
Q: If I only set a reorder point on the Overview tab, will I still get the low-stock email?
A: Yes, for both film and items. For film, saving a threshold on the Overview tab's product field automatically arms the separate row this page tracks. For an inventory item, the Overview tab's bell-icon Alert threshold control on that item's row isn't a separate field at all — it edits the exact same reorder point shown on this page, so arming it there arms it here too.
Q: Can I set a reorder point for an inventory item, not just film?
A: Yes. Pick "Inventory item" as the target kind when adding a reorder point on this page, or use the bell-icon Alert threshold control on that item's row on the Overview tab — both write to the same reorder point. Item thresholds are measured in whole units on hand rather than inches.
Q: What happens when I click Switch off — is the reorder point deleted?
A: No. Switching off is a soft disable: the threshold number is kept, the row stops appearing in the low-stock email and the Alerts tab, and it moves to the bottom of the list here. Click Edit (now labeled Re-arm) on that row any time to turn it back on. Note that the Overview tab's "Clear" option for items doesn't do this same disable — it only resets the threshold to 0, so use Switch off on this page for a full disable.
Q: Can I change which product or item a reorder point watches after creating it?
A: No. The target is locked once a row exists — editing it only lets you change the threshold number. To watch a different product or item, add a separate reorder point for it instead.
Q: How often is a reorder point re-checked, and how often does the email actually fire?
A: Every armed reorder point is re-checked hourly against live on-hand. The shop gets at most one consolidated low-stock email per target per day, even if that target stays below threshold for longer.
